FUTURES Awards Volusia Teachers 121 Mini-Grants Totalling Almost $60,000
Daytona Beach - December 7th, 2011.  FUTURES, Volusia County Schools education foundation, today awarded 121 mini-grants to Volusia County Schools teachers.  A total of almost $60,000 was awarded to teachers in amounts ranging from $150 to $1,500.

Over the past 24 years of community support, FUTURES has funded over 2,448 Mini-Grants for Volusia teachers, totaling $1.2 million.

Special awards announced on Wednesday include:

The Superintendent's Mini-Grant Award ($730) to Deltona High School teacher Kimberly Cove for "Dying To Learn To  Read: Forensics for High School Students!"  This Project will target the lowest level readers as identified by FCAT scores and enrollment in Intensive Reading.  The timeline for this project will be January through May 2012.  At the high School level it is difficult to find high-interest reading material to engage the students.  However, CSI and other forensic shows capture the interest of these students.  This project will enable the students to obtain exciting forensic books targeted at their age group and reading levels.  In addition, staff will collaborate with the science department and school deputy (SRO) to give the students an opportunity to experience hands-on forensic science. The (SRO) Deputy will present her experiences with criminal law and conduct forensic labs such as "DNA Fingerprint Analysis" with the students.  The school science department will conduct "Crime Scene Chromatography" and other labs with the students.
